Almost 10 years ago Quest Software released a free set of cmdlets to simplify interaction with Active Directory. This set of cmdlets provides quite flexible options for administering Active Directory, managing AD objects, AD ACLs, password settings, and security.Up to version 1.5.1 Quest Active Directory cmdlets were provided for free. Later, Dell acquired the Quest company and began selling licenses for the later versions. Later, the product was renamed to Active Roles and you can download it here:. However, the majority of administrators know this PowerShell module as Quest Active Directory Cmdlets for Powershell.Despite the fact that you can’t download the Active Roles module from the official website for free, it’s easy to find an archive with the old free version of QAD cmdlets (1.5.1) on the Internet – QuestActiveRolesManagementShellforActiveDirectoryx64151.msi.
Jorge here again. In this post, I want to show how to install the Active Directory Module for PowerShell. The AD module is already installed on domain controllers on Windows Server but on member servers, you can add the module as a feature in Server Manager or using PowerShell. Server Manager Workaround. Start Server Manager. Click Manage Add Roles and Features. Can you manage a Windows 2003 functional level domain with the Active Directory PowerShell modules? The modules were introduced with Server 2008 R2, so they don't work on Server 2003, but I have read about doing this with the AD management gateway service.
Hi All, we have a 2003 Functional Level domain with 2003 AD servers AKAD1 and WNAD1. We also have 2008R2 memeber servers MGT1 and MGT2. MGT1 has Powershell v2 installed and AKAD1 has Powershell v1 installed. I would like to do some AD management (using PS1 scripts). I have tested the scripts in a 2008R2 functional level domain test environment which works fine.

What I am now trying to do is to test in the live domain (using a small subset). However, when I type 'Import-Module ActiveDirectory' I get the following:Windows PowerShellCopyright (C) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.PS C:Windowssystem32 Import-Module ActiveDirectoryWARNING: Error initializing default drive: 'Unable to find a default server with Active Directory Web Servicesrunning.' .PS C:Windowssystem32 Import-Module ActiveDirectoryCan anyone give me a pointer to an article that can step me through how to connect to a 2003 AD Server with Powershell v2.
